   Overview

Timberlock is family owned and operated and they are one of the oldest places in the Adirondacks, enjoying a truly spectacular wilderness, lakeside setting surrounded in all directions by forest preserve and mountain views. Despite their long history, Timberlock is not for everyone and a careful reading will tell you what they are and what they are not. Many resorts today have much more modern facilities than Timberlock does. They have elected to remain rustic, information, and retain many old traditions. Cabins are comfortable but basic. They do not have television or game rooms … in fact, they do not have electricity in any buildings except the main complex, which includes the kitchen, office and shop. Lighting in cabins is by bright propane lamps and hot water is also heated by propane.

First an early logging camp, then a subsistence farm that took in a few guests beginning about 1880, and known at Farrington’s. The property was acquired in 1922 by the Gavett family and expanded. It was purchased by the Catlins in 1964 after a life-long association as guests and staff. Over the years, the place has greatly improved the facilities while maintaining the “camp” tradition as one of the oldest hostelries in the Adirondacks. They still split piles of stove wood, light with gas lamps, walk the same 100-year-old paths, and represent the wishes of their guests … “rustic, but not rough”.

Timberlock’s rate of guest return is over 70%, among the highest in the industry, with some fourth generation guests. Still, many are coming for the first time and all are warmly received. All kinds of people visit Timberlock from professionals to working class, singles, families, retirees, and newlyweds. Their common denominator is the love for the mountain environment and a desire to share time with family and friends without competition from phone, fax, television or computer.

Cabins are sprinkled along a half-mile of Indian Lake, a 15-mile long wilderness gem. They are completely surrounded for miles in all directions by the state-owned Adirondack Forest Preserve, a vast six million acre area that is larger than the state of Vermont, or the national parks of Yellowstone or Glacier. It is a spectacular combination of wilderness, lakes, mountains and rivers.

Timberlock serves three outstanding meals a day on a covered porch open to the sun and breeze and sweeping views of the lake. If weather turns bad, clear curtains can be dropped. Meals are plentiful, varied and healthy, with traditional meat dishes, vegetarian options, and plenty of fresh salads, fruits and vegetables. Dining is information and children sit at the same table with their parents. Picnic lunches are packed on request for trail, boat, or car at no charge.

Breakfasts include juice, fruit variety, hot and cold cereals (try their delicious 12-grain, a favorite even with those who don’t like hot cereal), fresh eggs, farm honey, French toast, or blueberry pancakes topped with pure Vermont maple syrup. Lunches include soups, sandwiches, and a variety of hot dishes, fruits and salads. Dinners are varied with meats, seafood, fresh vegetables, and frequent salad bars, which are meals in themselves. Also served are a variety of pasta dishes, a chicken BBQ, as well as shish kabob and London broil, which are specialties on the outdoor grill. A great many of their breads and rolls are home made. Saturday night is a roast beef buffet, and at noon on Sunday there is a traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings.

There are many things to do at Timberlock, but some people don’t do much of anything … they sleep and read, cool off in the lake and enjoy the home cooked meals. Others take it on the run, sampling a little of everything … but they don’t care what you do! Everything on the property is on a take it or leave it basis – there are no pre-planned programs other than meal hours … do what you want, when you want!

Rates include three meals daily, picnic lunches on request, coffee, tea anytime, guest refrigerator, plenty of ice, all bedding, towels, portable cribs, canoes, rowboats, kayaks, Sunfish, Daysailer, Windsurfers, Hobi Cats, water skiing Sunday afternoon, unlimited tennis on four courts (two all weather, two Hartru), Big Chief launch cruises, guided trips, archery, children’s play area, beach toys, campfires, occasional evening programs, use of supervised shop, naturalist room, adult lodge, children’s play lodge, “Timbertots” children’s program, and instruction with any of the equipment. Optional charges include horseback riding and rental of boats with outboard motors.

Timberlock fully realizes that many people prefer a modern luxury resort, but Timberlock is not for everyone. It’s for those who would slow their pace, step back a page in time, and sample a life lived close to the land … with all the advantages of camping, yet non of its inconveniences, in a mountain-lake environment as unspoiled and untouched as they come … where there is an emphasis on the enjoyment of little everyday occurrences so often overlooked and where many of your vacation experiences may become permanent possession, enhancing life’s quality. For 100 some years now, this has been important to Timberlock’s guests and staff. If this sounds good to you, they’d like the opportunity to welcome you to Timberlock.
